Our Families® Elementary School Program    
Our Families is designed to provide practical information about family members and their interdependence.

The learning objectives listed beside each activity state the skills and knowledge the students will gain.

Activity One: Our Families
The students better understand what a family is by studying a poster. They discover how people in a family are alike and different and how they work together to make the place where they live a good place to live.
Key Learning Objectives
The students will
TRI identify what a family is
TRI recognize how people live and work together in a family
Activity Two: Our Families' Needs and Wants
The students become aware that all families must have food, clothing, and shelter to live, and they begin to understand the difference between a want and a need.

TRI explain the difference between a want and a need
Activity Three: Finding Our Families’ Needs and Wants
The students use a floor map to discover where members of a family would go to obtain their wants and needs.

TRI interpret map symbols
TRI place various kinds of symbols for businesses and services on a map
TRI recognize how family members depend on various businesses to provide their wants and needs
Activity Four: Our Families’ Jobs
The students learn how jobs provide for family members’ wants and needs. They draw pictures of family members doing jobs.
Key Learning Objectives
The students will
TRI explain the difference between a want and a need
TRI identify where people work at jobs
Activity Five: Our Families’ Tools
The students learn about important skills people need for the work force. They identify and describe some common tools and associate them with the skills each requires.

TRI become familiar with the meaning of tools and skills
TRI recognize that using tools on the job requires such skills as reading, writing, using numbers, and listening to others
Our Families enhances the students’ learning of the following concepts and skills:

All JA programs have technology enhancements and are designed to support the skills and competencies outlined in the SCANS (Secretary’s Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills) report. These programs also augment the school-based, work-based, and connecting activities for communities with school-to-work initiatives.
